World rail freight news round-up

A new rail link between Italy and China is planned following the signing of an MoU between Russia’s joint-stock Eurasian Rail Alliance (ERA), the Italy Consorzio ZAI Interporto Quadrante Europa logistics terminal in Verona, and the Port of Rostock, Germany. The three organisations plan to send containers from Verona to Rostock and then ship them via a short-sea route to the Russian Baltic port of Kaliningrad where they will be transhipped onto the main ERA rail route to China.

“Multimodal solutions allow us to provide much sought door-to-door cargo delivery services to our clients. Besides this, they help solve the problems that arise, for example, due to bottlenecks that are caused by maintenance work on the tracks and that lead to slower train speeds,” explained Alexey Grom, ERA president.

“This new route makes it possible to offer a genuinely customer-oriented services with shorter delivery times. The port in Kaliningrad can currently process up to eight trains a day and is connected to the entire Baltic Sea region via short-sea links. As many as 40 trains passed through the port in December 2018 and we can further increase the traffic volume to help realize its full capacity,” he added. Last year ERA transported 280,500 TEU on scheduled container trains in both directions between China and Europe via Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus on 1520 mm broad-gauge tracks. The overall yearly volume was 370,000 TEU, an increase of one third compared to 2017. The alliance provides transport services between Europe and China along 57 routes. The new and most important hubs in Europe are Neumarkt, Barcelona, Bremerhaven and Luxembourg.

Little Bits of Freight and Logistics News You May Have Missed
UK – The weekly round-up of smaller freight and logistics stories starts with the announcement that the Port of Tyne has partnered with Greggs Foundation to fund two Breakfast Clubs within the Port's community in South and North Shields. The Clubs will support 150 primary school children at Silverdale Primary in Wallsend and Marine Park Primary in South Shields.
The Port’s funding will enable both schools to operate Breakfast Clubs for two years covering the start-up and operating costs including the delivery of fresh bread from their nearest Greggs shop, and cereals, milk, spreads, fruit and yoghurt. The Greggs Breakfast Club Programme was established in 1999 to help primary school children get a nutritious start to their school day, every year the scheme sees 32,075 breakfasts served by over 500 clubs supporting young people in education.
UK – DP World Southampton advise us that there will be disruptions to traffic next weekend when the Redbridge roundabout will be closed from 21:00 hours on Friday 19 July until at least the evening of Saturday 20 July. This is giving time to demolish the existing pedestrian footbridge over the M271/A33, and will be replacing it with a safer and more user-friendly bridge later this year.
Diversions will be in place during the works and precise details of the closure, and the current traffic conditions can be seen HERE.
DENMARK – GAC Denmark has opened a new branch in Kalundborg to better serve the needs of GAC’s global principals in the liquid bulk and other sectors. Located 100 kilometres west of Copenhagen, Kalundborg is a key location for liquid and dry bulk cargo. The new office, following the opening of a branch office in Aarhus last year and another in Esbjerg in 2015, brings GAC Denmark’s total number of offices to four, enabling the company to meet client needs throughout the country.
CHINA – In advance of the IMO Sulphur Cap last month Finnish technology group Wärtsilä and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering the development of local production resources, thus ensuring further development and support of Wärtsilä’s exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) in the region.
By combining the experience, expertise and competence of the two companies, both of whom hold strong positions in their relative fields in the maritime market, they claim the partnership will create a ‘one-stop-shopping’ service for exhaust gas cleaning systems, thereby providing customers with seamless deliveries and installation for both new build and retrofit scrubber projects.
SWEDEN – The Weland group, which produces storage products from pallet racks to vertical lifts, has acquired Kodverkstan, specialist in Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and together with whom it developed the Compact Store WMS, which it now owns outright. Since 1999, when the two companies began to cooperate, approximately 400 customer installations of Compact Store have been made.
The WMS provides support for all operations included in the normal inventory management, such as incoming deliveries, combining, prioritising and starting of picking orders, transfer and refilling of items and inventory. Compact Store is built to control Weland Solutions vertical storage lifts in an efficient manner. The system is modular, making it easy to connect new functionality as needs arise and Compact Store version 2.0 will be launched later this year.
PANAMA – Anyone with an interest in paying for passage via the Panama Canal will need to view the ‘Proposal to Modify the Canal Toll System’, and be quick about it. Although published last month the Canal Authority have only broadly publicised the need to respond this week, with the public consultation closing on July 15. The 78 page document is a confusing mix of parameters for separate vessel classes which look like they were written by a civil servant with a migraine and whose wife has just announced she’s leaving.
The PCA release says all interested parties are invited to participate in the consultation process as well as the public hearing to be held in Panama City, Panama, on July 24, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. (local time). In accordance with established rules, the Panama Canal will consider all correspondence received by 4:15 p.m. (local time) on July 15, 2019, as well as comments and opinions presented during the public hearing. Other than this there is no link to the consultation.
HUNGARY – GERMANY – Early this month Ekol Hungary and Rail Cargo Hungary celebrated the transportation of Ekol’s 3000th trailer between Budapest and Neuss. This intermodal service has saved over 3,000 tonnes of CO2 and provides a gateway for customers into the Benelux countries, Northern France and the UK. At a small ceremony attended by Hungarian state transport secretary Mr László Mosóczi, Country Manager for Ekol, Akos Kovacs, said:
“Ekol’s strategy is to keep developing the intermodal connection, so we are happy to open more and more train services within Europe. We have been using the train route between Budapest and Germany for nearly 2 years. Currently, we offer this connection 4 times per week and the transport takes 30 hours. Our rates on this route are more affordable, the transit time is similar to road transport while being more environmentally-friendly.”
CHINA – Last week the Joint stock company United Transport and Logistics Company - Eurasian Rail Alliance (UTLC ERA) and logistics operator Lanzhou Anting PIL Logistics agreed a Memorandum of Understanding. Both Parties will work to develop the China - Europe - China intermodal service carrying container cargo by rail. UTLC ERA will be responsible for transit shipping from terminal to terminal via the 1520 mm railway gauge, whereas Lanzhou Anting PIL Logistics will be servicing Chinese customers. The Parties have also agreed to combine their efforts in promoting the route in order to attract new shippers.
